It planned to physically eliminate the Ukrainian defenders by detonating explosives in areas where the Defense Forces were based.
Counterintelligence officers of the Security Service of Ukraine neutralized the network of agents of the FSB of the Russian Federation in the Zaporozhye region. This was reported on the SBU website on Tuesday, May 9.
It is indicated that one of the group members is a former military man, and the other is the personal driver of a local high official.
“The attackers are preparing terrorist attacks against the command staff of the Defense Forces and SBU employees deployed in the region and involved in combat missions on the southern front,” the report said.
Russian agents collect “temporal” information about places of temporary deployment and movement routes of Ukrainian defenders. The information received is sent to the FSB in the form of electronic geolocations, media files and text messages through a private chat on Telegram. With the coordinates of enemy agents, the Russians want to make targeted strikes using cruise or ballistic missiles.
In addition, the invaders considered the “option” of physically eliminating the Ukrainian defenders by placing explosives, which they planned to install in the areas where the defense forces were based. To prepare the attacks, Russian agents received a $4,000 “advance” from their handlers from the FSB.
However, the SBU acted ahead of the curve – it exposed intruders in a timely manner, documented their actions and detained them during the execution of the enemy’s mission.
According to the investigation, the leader of the agent group of the aggressor country is a resident of Zaporozhye, a former military man. After the outbreak of a large-scale war, he turned to his brother, who lived in St. Petersburg, with a request to “arrange” for him a “contact” with the Russian special service.
Soon, in personal correspondence, he contacted an FSB staff officer who assigned him the task of intelligence and subversive activities against Ukraine.
To fulfill them, the traitor lured his acquaintance, who worked as a driver, to the head of one of the administrations of the Zaporozhye district. At the direction of the FSB, the driver used the officer “in the dark”, making secret audio recordings of his phone conversations in the car.
In addition, the traitors “directed” enemy air strikes on bridges and railroad crossings in the region.
They are also looking for their “like-minded people” for potential recruitment and integration into the FSB agent pool.
During searches of the detainees’ living quarters, SBU officers recovered: an AK-47 Kalashnikov assault rifle; almost 1 thousand bullets of various calibers; combat and smoke grenades with accessories.
On the basis of the collected evidence, the investigators of the Security Service informed both detainees of suspicion under the article on high treason committed under martial law by prior agreement of a group of people (part 2 of article 28, part 2 of article 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine). They chose a measure of restraint in the form of detention.
The investigation continues to determine all the circumstances of the crime.
Earlier, the SBU detained two enemy informers, one of whom worked for PMC Wagner. They “released” to the invaders the locations of the Defense Forces on the front-line and front-line regions of Donbass.
