Von der Leyen wrote about this on her Twitter.
The President of the European Commission noted that she was pleased to return to Kyiv, where the values that are dear to Europeans are defended every day.
Therefore, it is a very suitable place to celebrate Europe Day. I congratulate President Volodymyr Zelensky on making 9 May Europe Day also here in Ukraine,” von der Leyen said.
Recall that President Volodymyr Zelensky signed a decree on Monday, according to which now every year on May 9 in Ukraine they will celebrate Europe Day.
Europe Day is a holiday of the European Union, for which they chose the day of the proclamation of the so-called Schuman Declaration, that is, the speech of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of France, Robert Schuman, on May 9, 1950. This speech is considered the starting point for the unification of European countries into a supranational community, which eventually became the European Union.
