Rafael Grossi said he was very concerned about the real nuclear risks and physical safety of the plant.
Experts from the International Atomic Energy Agency received information that the evacuation of residents has already begun from Energodar, where most of the plant’s personnel live. Explosions are also regularly heard near the nuclear power plant. This was said by the head of the IAEA Rafael Grossi, the IAEA said in a statement.
Grossi noted that the situation around Zaporozhye NPP is becoming more unpredictable and potentially dangerous.
According to him, experts of the ZNPP area organization continue to hear explosions, including on May 5.
“The general situation at the Zaporizhzhya NPP site is becoming increasingly unpredictable and potentially dangerous. I am deeply concerned about the real risks to the nuclear and physical safety of the plant. We must act now to avoid the threat of a serious nuclear accident and the associated consequences for the population and the environment” said Grossi.
He emphasized that this large nuclear facility must be protected.
It can be recalled that on Saturday, Energoatom reported that five power units of the nuclear power plant are in a state of cold shutdown, and the 5th power unit is in a state of hot shutdown.
Earlier, the Director General of the IAEA, Rafael Grossi, said that during a visit to the Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant at the end of March, he saw clear signs of military preparations.
