On May 5, the Berlin police issued a special decree dedicated to the 78th anniversary of the end of World War II. According to the document, in the German capital on May 8 and 9 it will not be possible to use Russian and Ukrainian flags next to three Soviet memorials – in Treptow, Tiergarten and Pankow-Schoenholz.
The Ambassador of Ukraine to the Federal Republic of Germany Aleksey Makeev did not agree with this decision.
The ban on the Ukrainian flag is very short-sighted and unreasonable. The Germans have no problem with the Ukrainian flag, which symbolizes peace and freedom,” he said.
The Berlin police assured BILD that law enforcement officers maintain neutrality. They noted that on the days of commemoration of the dead soldiers “one should not be distracted by unnecessary emotions.”
My heart tells otherwise. But, unfortunately, this event is necessary in order to promote calm. It was important to me that no one was hurt,” Berlin Mayor Kai Wegner said in a conversation with BILD.
Wegner on Monday, May 8, should lay a wreath just together with the Ambassador of Ukraine Oleksiy Makeev.
Oil was added to the fire by the message of the Berlin police: at first, in a statement by law enforcement officers about the inadmissibility of using flags, it was not about Soviet, but about “Russian” memorials.
Some users noted that it was the Ukrainians who were in the ranks of the Soviet army that played a big role in the dismissal of Berlin. The Berlin police apologized and corrected the original wording.
