The EU Council approved 1 billion euros for shells in Ukraine

The Council of the EU approved the allocation of one billion euros for the joint purchase of ammunition and missiles for Ukraine.

The Council of the European Union on Friday, May 5, decided to allocate 1 billion euros for the purchase of ammunition for Ukraine within the framework of the European Peace Fund. This was reported in the press service of the EU Council.

“Today, the Council of the EU approved 1 billion euros of assistance under the European Peace Fund (EPF), which will further strengthen the power and stability of Ukraine to protect its independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as to protect civilian. population from the Russian military invasion”, said the press release.

These funds will finance “the provision of the Ukrainian Armed Forces with 155 mm artillery shells and, if necessary, missiles, which will be jointly purchased by EU member states in the European defense industry.”

“Today’s decision is another important step to supply more ammunition to Ukraine. The Ukrainian Armed Forces need an impressive amount of ammunition to protect the Ukrainian people and the territory of Ukraine. They need it urgently, ” said the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Joseph Borrell.

According to him, in conjunction with the previous decision on the rapid supply of ammunition from existing stocks, the Council of the EU allocates 2 billion euros for these purposes, bringing the total amount of EU military support to Ukraine at 5.6 billion euros.

Recall that earlier the ambassadors of the EU member states agreed on a scheme for the joint purchase of ammunition for Ukraine. The European Commission has allocated 500 million euros to support ammunition production and help EU member states replenish their stocks.
