The language ombudsman said he would recommend to Parliament to amend the passport regulations accordingly.
Taras Kremen, Commissioner for the Protection of the State Language, will insist on the exclusion of the old Russian language from passports. He said this in a briefing on Thursday, May 4.
The Ombudsman said he would recommend to the Verkhovna Rada to amend the passport provision. Kremin recalled that today in Ukraine there are two passport forms – biometric ones, as well as old-style passports, where the data of a citizen of Ukraine is recorded in Ukrainian and the language of the aggressor country.
“We request amendments to the provision on the passport of a citizen of Ukraine, which should provide that the passport is issued in the state language in accordance with the first part of Article 8 of the language law,” said Kremen.
He added that he insists on uniting and conforming this paradigm to the law of language.
Earlier it was reported that the majority of Ukrainians are against learning the Russian language in schools.
