The US Defense Intelligence Agency confirmed that the drones flying over the Kremlin were launched in Moscow.
US intelligence director Avril Gaines said there was no information yet about who was behind the UAV flights over the Kremlin. He said this during a hearing on external threats to the US Senate Armed Services Committee on Thursday, May 4, Voice of America reports.
The Kremlin drone incident prompted comment from Republican Senator Tom Cotton.
“Russian authorities have accused Ukraine of trying to kill President Putin and said the United States is involved. It’s a serious matter if it’s true,” Cotton said.
“Obviously, you’ve seen the Ukrainian authorities deny their involvement in this, and at this stage we don’t have information that would allow us to make an independent assessment,” Avril Gaines replied.
Senator Cotton asked if intelligence officials knew that Vladimir Putin did not often spend nights in the Kremlin. After receiving a positive answer, he said: “The Kremlin does not look like the White House. In other words, it is not the main residence of the President of Russia. Even if he is there, these drones in the videos I saw , they do not appear to be weapons of a size that could cause significant damage to the Kremlin.Intelligence chiefs also responded.
“These seem to be the types of drones that require a fairly close line of sight, meaning someone on the ground in Moscow. Is this true?” asked the senator. “Potentially from the pictures I’ve seen. Yes,” said Scott Berrier, director of the US Defense Intelligence Agency.
Recall that on Wednesday Moscow announced an “attack by Ukrainian drones” on the Kremlin, regarding it as a “planned terrorist act and an attempt on the life of Russian leader” Vladimir Putin on the eve of Victory Day.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky assured that Kyiv did not make any “attack” on the Kremlin or its head Putin and uses weapons to protect its territory.
