Russia is unlikely to use its nuclear weapons during the war in Ukraine, according to American intelligence.
US intelligence considers it unlikely that Russia will use nuclear weapons during the war in Ukraine. This is what US Director of National Intelligence Avril Gaines and Director of the US Department of Defense Intelligence Agency Scott Berrier said, Voice of America reports.
It was noted that nuclear weapons issues were discussed during the hearings on external threats at the US Senate Armed Services Committee on Thursday, May 4.
Senator Angus King asked intelligence chiefs: “What is the assessment of the possibility that Putin will use nuclear weapons, what could provoke it, and how likely is that?”
To this question, the Director of the US Defense Intelligence Agency, Scott Berrier, answered: “I think in the nature of the conflict there is always this possibility. Now we consider it unlikely.”
In this regard, US Director of National Intelligence Avril Gaines confirmed this assessment: “I think, from an intelligence point of view, it is very likely. This is our current assessment.”
Earlier, the Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, Dmitry Medvedev, said that Russia’s adversaries should not underestimate the possibility of using nuclear weapons by Moscow, whose “hand cannot be moved.”
