The Norwegian Ministry of Defense believes that the need for military support for Ukraine is urgent, and that an increased defense budget will both help Ukraine and strengthen its own armed forces.
In the coming years, Norway plans to spend more than $1 billion on defense to meet NATO requirements, and also given the Russian war against Ukraine. This was stated in a statement by Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Stere, quoted by Norsk Rikskringkasting.
“Today we are putting forward a plan to use at least 2% of GDP for defense until 2026,” the statement said.
Norway is reportedly one of the countries that does not have a specific plan to achieve this goal, but today Norwegian Finance Minister Trygve Slagsvold Vedum said that after the start of an all-out Russian war against Ukraine, the country wants to strengthen national defense and the ability to defend itself.
The Minister states that the war in Ukraine has accelerated the government’s plans to achieve the agreed goals of NATO.
And Norwegian Defense Minister Bern Arild Gram has previously stated that the need for military support for Ukraine is urgent, and that such a defense budget would both help Ukraine and strengthen its own armed forces.
It can be remembered that in April, Norway declared 15 Russian diplomats persona non grata. They were expelled from the country for espionage.
