Agreements already exist on the deployment of US military bases in other NATO countries. Finland will sign the document as a newcomer to the Alliance.
Finland is preparing an agreement with the United States, which will allow the deployment of American military bases on the territory of the state. On Monday, May 1, writes Helsingin Sanomat.
The agreement will allow the US Army to use Finnish territory and bases for training and deployment of military equipment.
Mikael Antell, spokesperson of the Finnish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, explained that the agreement with the United States will complement the country’s membership in the North Atlantic Alliance.
“The agreement allows for the deployment of troops, their presence in the country, the storage of military equipment and possible investment in infrastructure through funds provided by the US Congress,” he explained.
At the same time, a representative of the Finnish Foreign Ministry emphasized that the agreement has nothing to do with the possible deployment of nuclear weapons in Finland.
Finnish authorities believe that the conclusion of the agreement will strengthen the country’s security and defense.
Finnish authorities are starting preparations for the construction of the first section of the Russian border fence.
