As part of the month-long program, Bern will highlight priorities related to the development of sustainable peace and the protection of civilians.
On May 1, the chairmanship of the UN Security Council passed from Russia to Switzerland. This is stated in the message of the Swiss Foreign Ministry to Twitter.
“Today, Switzerland takes the leadership of the UN Security Council,” the ministry said, adding that it is “an opportunity to start the work of the Council.”
Earlier, the Swiss Foreign Ministry said that the one-month chairmanship of the Security Council will allow to “highlight the thematic priorities related to the development of sustainable peace and the protection of civilians.”
The basis of the work program is largely driven by the need to expand the mandates of UN peacekeeping missions or sanctions regimes.
Remember that the leadership of the UN Security Council alternates between its members every month. Japan led in January, Malta in February, Mozambique in March, Russia in April, Switzerland in May, and the United Arab Emirates in June.
Earlier, the adviser to the head of the Office of the President of Ukraine Mykhailo Podolyak called Russia the chairmanship of the UN Security Council and the justification of the war in Ukraine “a shame of democracy.”
