In particular, the videos were removed from the platform on which Russia’s invasion of Ukraine was called a “liberation mission.”
YouTube removed more than 70,000 videos and 9,000 channels related to the war in Ukraine for violating content guidelines, reports The Guardian, citing YouTube chief product officer Neil Mohan.
In particular, the videos were removed from the platform on which Russia’s invasion of Ukraine was called a “liberation mission.”
Since the war broke out in February, YouTube has shut down several channels, including the channel of pro-Kremlin propagandist Vladimir Solovyov. Channels linked to Russia’s defense and foreign ministries have also temporarily suspended video uploads in recent months for describing the war as a “liberation mission.”
YouTube chief product officer Neil Mohan explained to The Guardian that the company has a policy on major violent events, such as the Holocaust denial.
“Of course, what is happening in Ukraine is a major violent event. So we used this policy to take unprecedented action,” he said.
Mohan added that YouTube’s war news content has more than 40 million views in Ukraine alone.
“The first and perhaps most important responsibility is to make sure people looking for information about this event get accurate, high -quality and reliable information on YouTube … The views of authoritative channels on our platform have increased significantly , of course., in Ukraine, as well as in the countries surrounding Ukraine, Poland, as well as in Russia itself, “added the company representative.
Most of the removed content was Kremlin narratives about the aggression, Mohan said.
YouTube has approximately 90 million users in Russia, although it no longer allows ads on the platform in the country.
The platform has also implemented a global ban on channels associated with Russian state media, including Russia Today and Sputnik.
Remember that Youtube can be blocked in Russia. Roskomnadzor said YouTube was a “terrorist organization” that “distributes anti-Russian videos.”
