A flash in the sky over Kiev around 22:00 on April 19 was explained at the State Space Agency of Ukraine. They indicated that in the coming days this phenomenon could happen again. We are talking about the fall of a meteorite from the Lyrid meteor shower.

According to the Main Center for Special Control of the State Space Agency, experts determined the exact time of the outbreak of an unknown space object over Kiev as 21:57. It was at this moment that a high-energy acoustic event was registered by infrasound means on the territory of Ukraine.
The estimated location of the epicenter of the explosion is in the Kyiv region. The event is probably associated with the entry of a cosmic body into the dense layers of the atmosphere, the information is being specified, the State Space Agency explained.
Experts added that the outbreak could not be associated with the fall of the American RHESSI satellite, since the spacecraft is due to fall to Earth on April 20 in a completely different area far beyond the borders of Ukraine.
The outbreak was most likely caused by a meteorite falling from the Lyrid stream, the State Space Agency added.
Recall that every year in April, the Earth passes through the trail of Comet Thatcher, leaving the Lyrid meteor shower. Lyrids are very fast and luminous meteors that come from Comet Thatcher. Lyrids do not leave long burning trails as they sweep through the Earth’s atmosphere, their hallmark being bright flashes or so-called “fireballs”. The Lyrid meteor shower is one of the oldest known to mankind. It was still observed by the Chinese in 687 BC. The Lyrid stream got its name from the constellation Lyra, from which the meteor shower allegedly falls. Earth entered Comet Thatcher’s plume on April 15 and will leave it on April 29. The peak of the meteor shower falls on April 21st.
