China tragedy: Beijing hospital fire kills at least 29 people

At least 29 people have died from fire in a Beijing hospital, authorities said on Wednesday, which also marks the arrest of twelve people, including the center’s director.

At the press conference Li ZongrongDeputy Mayor of Fengtai District, said 29 people had died in the fire in changfeng hospital.

The previous balance of this fire, the deadliest in the Chinese capital since 2002, was 21 dead.

For their part, the police announced the arrest of 12 people in connection with the incident.

Sun Haitao, from the Beijing Public Security Bureau, told a press conference that the director of the center and employees of a renovation company were among the detainees.

A preliminary investigation showed that the cause of the fire was “sparks generated during the repair and construction of the hospital’s in-patient department.” Zhao Yangfrom the local fire brigade.

The sparks “set fire to the volatile paint elements at the scene,” Zhao explained.

Dramatic footage posted on social media shows people trying to protect themselves from the fire by sitting on outdoor air conditioning units or clinging to sheets before jumping out of the hospital.

Vice Mayor Mr. fantai expressed “deep condolences” in connection with the death of 16 women and 13 men as a result of the tragedy.

“We feel deep remorse and guilt,” Li Zongrong told reporters when he released the death toll on Wednesday.

There was a strong police presence around the establishment and a group of onlookers who were watching and recording the place on their phones, journalists from AFP. (According to AFP)
