Polish Interior Minister Mariusz Kaminsky announced on Tuesday the start of electrification and the installation of electronic surveillance on the Polish-Russian border, corresponding to the enclave. Kaliningrad (north).
At a press conference in Warsaw, Kaminsky explained that there is currently a barrier with three rows of fences and barbed wire along the perimeter of the border, and that work is underway to lay poles and lay high-voltage cables to secure the border.
Anna Michalska, a spokeswoman for the Polish Border Guard, told the press that it is planned to divide approximately 200 kilometers of the common border into 12 sectors. Russia And Polandand by the end of September, 3,000 remote-controlled video cameras will operate and 700 kilometers of fences will be electrified.
On Tuesday, workers from the Polish company Telbud, which was also tasked with building a border wall with Belarus, began work in the Bezledy and Sepol (north) regions and will soon begin construction of a logistics and command center for all the border facility located in Kętrzyn (north).
Budget
According to data provided by the Polish government, the budget for the entire project is around 80 million euros.
“These investments guarantee the detection of crimes at the border, in particular, irregular migration and smuggling of goods,” said Lieutenant Michalska.
Warsaw closes the border
November 2, 2022 Warsaw decided to “seal the border” he shares with Russia in the Kaliningrad region and build “immediately” a 2.5-meter triple barrier of fences and barbed wire, which will later be replaced by a wall.
All work related to this decision has been expedited so that it can be completed before October of this year, and not until December, as originally envisaged.
As in the case of the border with Belarus, the Polish government applied in Kaliningrad the law on border security of November 2021, which prohibits access near this barrier to anyone who does not belong to the state security forces.
