Swiss President Alain Berset today defended his country’s neutrality in the war in Ukraine during a working visit to Germany, a country that, like other European partners, has been denied permission to re-export Swiss-made weapons to Kiev.
Neutrality means that neither side involved in the conflict receives “any military support,” Berset said during a speech with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz during a working visit to Berlin.
The President of Switzerland recalled that his country supported the sanctions imposed at the European level against Russia and provided humanitarian aid and reconstruction Ukraine.
However, the country in which the UN organizations and the International Committee of the Red Cross are located must observe the rule of neutrality in matters of military support.
Switzerland rejects arms requests
Swiss rejected consecutive requests for GermanyDenmark and Spain, among other countries, to send Swiss-made weapons or to re-export military equipment in their armed forces to Ukraine.
Among these rejected requests was a request submitted by the Berlin government for the purchase of the Leopard 2 battle tanks currently in service with the Swiss army to replace those the German army had supplied to Ukraine.
