Turkish deputies are unlikely to discuss the “Sweden question” before the summer holidays.
Sweden is unlikely to become a formal member of NATO at the July summit in Vilnius. It was reported on April 17 by SverigesRadio.
It is noted that the delay could last until September, when the Turkish parliament finally ratifies Stockholm’s application to join the alliance,
According to some Turkish analysts, after the presidential and parliamentary elections on May 14, deputies are unlikely to discuss the “Sweden issue” before the summer holidays, which usually last from June to September.
According to the broadcaster, after Finland’s accession to NATO, pressure increased on Turkey and Hungary from the US, France, and Great Britain, in favor of Sweden’s rapid entry into the alliance.
In addition, Norway, in negotiations at various levels, is trying to convince countries that have not ratified the Swedish application to do so.
Recall that Sweden applied to join NATO together with Finland on May 18, 2022. All the countries of the alliance, except Turkey and Hungary, approved the protocol.
In January of this year, a scandal broke out between Turkey and Sweden over the burning of the Koran near the Turkish embassy in Stockholm. Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that after this and other anti-Turkish actions by Sweden, Ankara should not expect to support its application to join NATO.
As a result, Finland joined the alliance on its own.
