The Turkish president named the “price” of joining NATO for Sweden, and agreed with Finland on a “close dialogue.”
Turkey has called on Sweden to reconsider its attitude towards terrorist organizations and lift the arms embargo to become part of NATO. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced this in a telephone conversation with Swedish Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson, Reuters reports.
The Turkish head of state said Sweden “should reconsider its fears of terrorist organizations and lift the arms embargo on Turkey, imposed after its invasion of Syria in 2019.”
Finnish President Sauli Niiniste, after a telephone conversation with Erdogan, reported on an “open and direct” dialogue.
“I assure you that, as NATO allies, Finland and Turkey will be provided with mutual security, and therefore our relationship will be strengthened. Finland has condemned terrorism in all its forms and manifestations. Close dialogue continues, “Niiniste said.
It is noteworthy that Turkey has accused Sweden and Finland of harboring people associated with Kurdistan Workers ’Party (PKK) militants and followers of Fethullah Gülen, whom Ankara believes was the organizer of the 2016 coup attempt.
Recall, earlier it was reported that Turkey will not support the entry of Finland and Sweden into NATO. In return, he wants them to condemn all Kurdish organizations and remove restrictions on arms sales. But Finnish President Sauli Niiniste later said his country and Sweden should have an agreement with Turkey.
