About 950 hectares of vegetation burned this Sunday in the south of France, in the department Eastern Pyreneeswhich borders Girona (northern Spain) to the south, and 300 people have been evacuated, authorities said.
“The fire covered more than 930 hectares in the Eastern Pyrenees. 300 people were evacuated,” the French interior minister tweeted. Gerald Darmaninannouncing the mobilization of 500 firefighters and rescuers.
During the night, firefighters reported that 950 hectares had already been consumed by the flames.
The fire was announced in the morning in the municipal conditions of the city of Cerberus and from Banyuls-sur-Mernear the Spanish border, and was blown up by strong winds.
This is the largest fire declared in France so far this year, and it happened in a drought-hit department.
