The action took place on Great Saturday, which this year fell on April 15th. Traditionally, the ceremony of the ascension of the Holy Fire before Easter was performed by the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Jerusalem and the Jerusalem Patriarchate of the Armenian Apostolic Church. The event was broadcast online by many media outlets.
The ascension ceremony began with a procession of the cross, in which the priests of the Jerusalem Orthodox Church, the Armenian Apostolic Church, the Syrian and Coptic churches took part. Then the Patriarch of Jerusalem and the Archimandrite of the Armenian Church entered the main altar.
After that, the doors were sealed and put on them with a special wax seal of the goalkeepers of the Church of the Holy Sepulcher. Subsequently, the patriarch brought out 33 lighted candles, each of which symbolizes one year of the earthly life of Jesus Christ. After that, lampadas were lit from the Holy Fire, which will be taken to different countries.
As you know, in 2023, Catholics celebrate Easter on April 9, while Orthodox Christians celebrate the Resurrection of the Lord on April 16.
Recall, Metropolitan of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine Epiphanius will hold a service on Easter at the Assumption Cathedral in the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra. In all likelihood, the service will be held in the morning after curfew, because there are no plans to cancel it in the capital.
