Prime Minister of Japan Fumio KishidaAccording to NHK, he had to be evacuated after launching what appeared to be a smoke bomb as he was about to give a speech on a street in Wakayama City.
The man, whose identity has not been revealed, was detained by security forces at the place where Kishida was supposed to appear for the speech. The explosion caused a great panic on the spot.
In a video filmed by a Japanese TV companyit is seen how those present at the action are evacuated from the territory fleeing after the explosion, while the security forces also move the alleged criminal, moving away from the site of a small explosion.
The prime minister would have driven by car to the police station in the city without sustaining any injuries; while the detainee was also mobilized to the police stations. According to the aforementioned chain, firefighters would confirm that there were no casualties.
The detonation of this yet-to-be-identified device was supposed to take place around 11:25 a.m. local time, according to the Kyodo news agency, as Kishida was preparing to make a street speech as part of an action by his political party, the Liberal Party. Democratic Party (PLD), which later also organized another event in the city, although it had already been cancelled.
Had to fire an employee
Fumio Kishida fired one of his secretaries two months ago after some of the bureaucrat’s homophobic comments became publicly unacceptable, creating a new scandal for the already unpopular president.
Masayoshi Arai, an official very close to Kishida who served as his executive secretary, told reporters informally yesterday that he “wouldn’t like to live next door” to an LGBTQ+ couple and that he doesn’t want to “even look at them,” according to comments released by local press.
Arai’s remarks come just days after Kishida took a cautious stance in the ongoing parliamentary debate on marriage between
same-sex couples, which is not legally recognized in Japan, which has caused discomfort for the group, which has filed several lawsuits to have their unions recognized, but the results have been mixed and some are in progress.
