SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — A “credible threat” forced California senators out of the Capitol and into a new location for their session Thursday, officials said.
State senators and their staff members were notified of the threat to the building in an email from Senate Secretary Erika Contreras.
“The California Highway Patrol (CHP) has notified the Senate of a threat they believe to be credible involving the Capitol,” Contreras wrote. “CHP and security partners are present in greater numbers in the Capitol area and are monitoring the situation.”
The California Highway Patrol, which serves as the state police, did not provide additional details when contacted by The Associated Press.
Contreras said the session was moved to another nearby state building. The meeting, scheduled for 9 am, was postponed by 45 minutes. He ordered staff who had not yet come to work to stay home and told those already in their offices to stay put.
Leaders of the State Assembly did not comment.
Outside the Capitol on Thursday, business appeared to continue as usual, with a rally taking place and people walking in the park surrounding the building.
