The country will be left by Russian intelligence officers working under diplomatic cover, the head of the Norwegian Foreign Ministry stressed.
Norwegian authorities have declared 15 Russian embassy employees persona non grata. This was announced on April 13 by the press service of the Norwegian Foreign Ministry.
It is known that the decision of the country’s government is a response to the changed security situation in Europe, which caused an increase in the intelligence threat from Russia.
“This is an important step in countering and reducing the level of Russian intelligence activity in Norway and thus in protecting our national interests,” said Foreign Minister Anniken Huitfeld.
He clarified that 15 Russian intelligence officers who worked under diplomatic cover were declared persona non grata. They should leave the country as soon as possible.
“Currently, Russia poses the biggest intelligence threat to Norway. We take it seriously and are now implementing countermeasures,” added the Foreign Minister.
He also emphasized that Norway strives to maintain normal diplomatic relations with Russia, but does not accept “undesirable intelligence activities.”
It will be recalled that at the end of March, the Estonian Foreign Ministry announced that it would expel an employee of the Russian embassy from the country for active participation in destroying the country’s security and constitutional structure.
