Tibisai Lucenaformer president of the National Electoral Council (NEC) of Venezuela, accused of allegedly supporting chavism in elections between 2006 and 2020, he died this Wednesday at the age of 63, the government said.

“The landscape has changed Tibisai Lucena (…) She was a true fighter for life,” Vice President Delcy Rodriguez tweeted, without specifying the cause of death, although press reports indicate that she had been battling cancer for years.

Lucena, a sociologist currently serving as minister of university education, stepped down from leadership of the electoral body in 2020 when the Supreme Court (TSJ) appointed new authorities after assuming parliamentary functions that were declared in “contempt”.

To questions from the opposition and the international community

She presided over 18 electoral processes, and in some of them the opposition and part of the international community accused her of being involved in alleged electoral fraud in favor of the ruling Chavismo. Days before the disputed 2017 Constituent Assembly election, he was sanctioned by the United States for “undermining democracy and human rights.”

It has also been sanctioned by Canada and the European Union.

the president Nicholas Maduro, who in October 2021 appointed her as his Minister of Education, also offered his condolences to family and friends. “God rest his soul!”
