More than 17,000 troops will participate in the maneuvers of which 5,000 are Filipinos.
The Philippines and the United States will hold the largest joint exercise in the history of the two countries against the backdrop of China’s military activity in the Taiwan Strait. This was reported on April 10 by The Star newspaper.
It is known that more than 17 thousand military personnel will participate in the Balikatan maneuvers, which will begin on April 11: five thousand Filipinos, 12 thousand Americans and 111 Australians.
The number of participants in this year’s exercises is almost twice as large as last year, the publication emphasized.
They last 18 days and cover a large area.
Earlier, China announced a three-day military exercise United Sharp Sword in the Taiwan Strait, as well as in the waters north, south and east of the island. This happened after Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen’s transit trip to the United States, where she met with Speaker of the House of Representatives, Kevin McCarthy.
It can be recalled that in February of this year, the United States and the Philippines agreed to obtain US military access to four new bases, making their total number nine.
