The President of the United States signed a decree extending sanctions against Russia for another year, imposed in April 2021 due to the harmful external activities of the Russian government and expanded in March 2022 after Moscow’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
According to the executive order, according to US law, the sanctions will end if, within 90 days before the annual date of their announcement, the president does not announce the extension of the established restrictions.
The President of the United States sent a Message to Congress on the extension for a year of the emergency situation related to the harmful foreign activities of the government of the Russian Federation.
Ukrainian Ambassador to the United States Oksana Markarova explained on her Facebook page that this decision by Biden allows the competent US authorities to continue to apply sanctions and other restrictive measures against the Russian government within the framework of previously issued executive orders of the US President.
According to a letter addressed to the Speaker of the House of Representatives and the President of the US Senate, “the external activities of the government of the Russian Federation are harmful – these are, in particular, attempts to undermine the conduct of free and fair democratic elections and democratic institutions in the United States, their allies and partners, as well as the involvement in and facilitating malicious cyber activities against the United States, its allies and partners.
Russia has also been accused of promoting and using transnational corruption to influence foreign governments, targeting dissidents or journalists, destroying security in countries and regions important to the national security of the United States, and violating generally accepted principles of international law, including respect for the territorial integrity of states.
Biden believes that all of these Russian actions continue to pose an extreme threat to US national security, foreign policy, and the economy.
