China today announced the execution of a driver who crashed into a crowd on the street in May 2021, killing five people and injuring eight.
Intermediate People’s Court in Northeast China City Dalian informed today of the imposition of the death penalty on a man convicted on charges of “endangering public safety”.
convicted, Liu Dongcharged with pedestrians crossing a zebra on Dalian’s Wuhui Street “because he couldn’t come to terms with his investment failure” while the traffic light was red for cars, the court said in 2021.
Victims
The court clarified that four people died on the spot, another one later that day, and eight more were injured of varying severity.
After being hit, Liu collided with a van, abandoned his car and drove away.
The Chinese authorities do not provide official figures on the number of death row inmates, but in its 2022 annual report, human rights organization Amnesty International noted that “thousands of executions were allegedly carried out” in that country. (EFE)
