In March, Turkey decided to delay Stockholm’s ratification of NATO membership, citing its insufficient fight against terrorism.
Turkey plans to return to the issue of ratifying Sweden’s application for NATO membership in the first half of June. This was announced on Wednesday, April 5, in an interview with the Anadolu agency by the advisor to the President of Turkey, Ibrahim Kalin.
He noted that Sweden has not yet met a number of conditions, which is why Turkey cannot give the green light to the country’s entry into the North Atlantic Alliance.
“After our Parliament approved Finland’s NATO membership, we agreed to hold our next meeting in Sweden in the first or second week of June,” added Kalin.
He explained the timing by the fact that from June 1, a new anti-terrorist law will come into force in Sweden, which will be a step towards meeting Ankara’s demands.
On the eve of NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg expressed hope for the early accession of Sweden to NATO.
As you know, in March, Turkey decided to postpone the ratification of the Stockholm accession, citing its insufficient fight against terrorism.
Earlier it was reported that NATO is preparing a multi-year program for Ukraine. Its purpose is to ensure the defense of Ukraine so that this kind of armed attack by Russia does not happen again in the future.
