Off the coast of Turkey today, March 5, the cargo ship “Joe 2” under the flag of Guinea-Bissau with 14 crew members on board, which was heading to Ukraine from the Turkish port of Iskenderun, sank.
At least three crew members were killed. Five people were rescued, the search for others continues. It is reported by the Associated Press.
All members of the Joe 2 crew are Syrian citizens.
The ship sank near the city of Kumluca in the province of Antalya. According to media reports, it was transporting aluminum and was heading to Ukrainian Izmail.
The reason for the sinking of the vessel is still unknown, an investigation has begun.
The distress signal was received by the Turkish Coast Guard at 3.47. A ship, several boats and two helicopters were sent to the rescue. Two crew members were rescued by Coast Guard helicopters, and three more were rescued by other vessels in the area.
It is noted that the rescue work was hampered by a storm.
