One and a half million people of working age live isolated from society in Japanand nearly 20% attribute their lockdown to the pandemic, according to a Japanese government study, the first by the authorities.

This phenomenon affects about 2% of people aged 15 to 64, i.e. 1.46 million people, according to this study from November 2022 and published over the weekend.

The reason most often cited by people living in such isolation is leaving work, followed by pandemic COVID-19, the cause was named by 18% of respondents aged 15 to 39 years and 20% in the age group from 40 to 64 years.

Other reasons are the fact of suffering from depression or bullying at school or in the workplace.

hikikomori

These people are known in Japan as hikikomoriand these are people who avoid social activities such as going to school or work and who have only gone shopping or pursuing a hobby for at least six months.

“Some people fit our definition hikikomoribecause because of COVID, they were not recommended to go out, and as a result they had less contact with the society,” he said. AFP this Wednesday Koji Naito, a government official. (AFP)
