The accident happened in June 2019, which resulted in the man breaking his L3 vertebrae, puncturing his lung, and breaking his tailbone and pelvis.
Briton Mike Newman was involved in a motorcycle accident that left him paralyzed from the waist down. Doctors said he would never walk again. However, he was able to not only fully recover, but also become a licensed personal trainer. His story is leading the Metro edition.
“I was on my back when I felt it explode underneath me. I tried to get up, but I couldn’t move,” said the Briton.
Mike had metal rods inserted and he couldn’t feel his legs. The man spent six months in the hospital. His wounds became infected and the rods in his back were broken.
After a few hours, Newman returned home and set himself to prove wrong the doctors who said he would never walk again.
Thanks to assistive devices and physical therapy, he was able to take his first steps after the accident.
“One of my biggest goals was to be able to use the bathroom by myself again, and it felt like a huge accomplishment to be able to use the bathroom by myself instead of using a catheter,” Mike recalls.
After that, he started going to the gym.
“By practicing and forcing myself to walk, the frantic sensation began to return to my legs and I found that I could stand and walk for a short time,” the man added.
These achievements prompted him to reapply for a personal training license and he became the first person to complete the course while in a wheelchair.
Now he uses his experience of paralysis to teach others in a similar situation and give them the new hope they need to get back on their feet.
We remind you, earlier the Peteran of the US Army, Richard Nyder, who was injured while serving in Iraq in 2005 and could not walk for almost a decade, was able to get up again with the help of a motorized ReWalk Personal 6.0 exoskeleton.
