The president international book fair (FIL) of Guadalajara and Guadalajara International Film Festival Raul Padilla Lopez committed suicide this Sunday morning, as confirmed by the Attorney General of Jalisco in Mexico.

In a statement, the state agency said it was investigating the circumstances in which the former rector of the University of Guadalajara (UdeG), who was at his home in the Vallarta Poniente (district) area of ​​Guadalajara, committed the crime. own life.

UdeG regrets the death of what it called “one of the most important cultural promoters in recent Mexican history” who founded the FIL, considered the most important in Spanish-speaking countries and who won the 2020 Princess of Asturias Prize for Communication and the Humanities along with the Hay Festival.

Padilla Lopez, 69, was rector of UdeG from 1989 to 1995, during which time he promoted reform to create a network of Jalisco universities. He has also been a promoter of the University Cultural Center and various initiatives to promote the arts.

The cultural promoter has also had various media clashes with Jalisco governor Enrique Alfaro and the president over the past three years. Andres Manuel Lopez Obradorwho called it part of the “caciqs” that controlled the country’s public universities.

UdeG rector Ricardo Villanueva expressed his regret to the university community over the death of its former rector.

FIL Lima 2023: Mexico will no longer be a guest country
