Borrell on Russia’s UN presidency: fitting for April Fools’ Day

The EU will oppose any abuse by the Russian Federation during its presidency of the United Nations Security Council.

The head of EU diplomacy, Josep Borrell, strongly commented on the beginning of Russia’s leadership of the UN Security Council, saying that it was appropriate for April Fools’ Day. Borrell wrote this on Saturday, April 1st at Twitter.

“Russia’s current chairmanship of the UN Security Council is appropriate for April Fools’ Day,” the politician said.

Borrell noted that, despite the fact that the Russian Federation is a permanent member of the Security Council, it continues to violate the very spirit of the legal framework of the United Nations.

“The EU will oppose any abuse by Russia during its presidency,” added the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.

As reported, in April, Russia chaired the UN Security Council for a month.

Earlier, Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba said that if Russia still heads the UN Security Council, it needs to be pushed into a corner with the help of methods and not allowed to promote false narratives about the war against Ukraine.

The United States also spoke about Russia’s leadership in the UN Security Council.

It is known that the UN Security Council consists of 10 rotating and five permanent members, including Russia, Great Britain, France, the USA and China, who have the right to veto. This month, Russia took over as head of the UN’s executive body, replacing Mozambique.
