On Thursday, an appeals court in Val-de-Marne, southeast of Paris, sentenced two men to 17 and 14 years in prison for the murder of Vanesa Campos, a Peruvian-born transgender prostitute who was gunned down in a Parisian forest in August 2018.

This is a reduced sentence compared to the one handed down at first instance in January 2022, when the two defendants, Mahmoud Qadri25 years old and Karim IbrahimA 30-year-old Parisian court sentenced him to 22 years in prison for murder as part of an organized gang.

Campos, 36 years old, who is in an illegal migration situation, died from a shot in the chest on the night of August 16-17, 2018 in the forest with. boulogneknown for the presence of sex workers.

DATA:

On the night of the events, Campos was found “naked, defenseless against the coming herd” by a group of at least ten young men, armed and “driven by a sense of arrogance,” the prosecutor said during the trial at first instance.

The purpose of this “punitive expedition” was to confront the “protectors” hired by South American prostitutes after being harassed for years by a gang of Egyptian thieves who robbed their clients.

In the first case, nine people were convicted, all Egyptians. Qadri and Ibrahim accused each other of a crime during that first trial.

Her death exposed the violence that prostitutes were subjected to. In 2020 Jessica Sarmientoanother Peruvian trans sex worker was hit by a car in the same forest, according to witnesses, on purpose.
