The lease of the Pochaev Lavra for the Ukrainian Orthodox Church by the Moscow Patriarchate is valid until 2052.
The Synod of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine at a meeting on Tuesday, March 28, decided to create a religious organization in the Pochaev Lavra, which was leased from the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate. This was reported by the OCU press service.
A religious organization was created as part of the Ternopil diocese of the OCU Pochaev Holy Dormition Lavra of the Ternopil diocese of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (Orthodox Church of Ukraine).
Metropolitan Nestor of Ternopil and Kremenets was approved as a sacred archimandrite.
In addition, the Synod also supported the position of Metropolitan Epiphanius, which he outlined in his appeal to the brothers of the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra. In particular, the OCU calls on the brothers of the Lavra to unite in the bosom of the local UOC.
The Synod also mentioned that it is necessary to preserve the monastic life and uninterrupted worship in the Lavra.
Pochaev Assumption Lavra is an Orthodox monastery in Pochaev, Ternopil region. It is the second largest Orthodox shrine in Ukraine after the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra. The Lavra consists of 16 churches, the archbishop’s residence, a bell tower and cells.
In 2003, the Pochaev Lavra was transferred to the free use of representatives of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate for 49 years.
Recall that the clergy of the UOC-MP must leave the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra before March 29. The Ministry of Culture promised to “stimulate” this process. The Kremlin expressed anger at the request for UOC monks to leave the Lavra in Kyiv.
