At least two people were killed Tuesday in a knife attack on a Muslim center in Lisbon, Portuguese police said, adding that the attacker was shot dead and is in custody.
First Minister Antonio Costa said that “it is premature to give any interpretation of this criminal act”,
“Everything points to a single incident,” he told reporters.
Footage from Portuguese television shows an armed criminal near a center of Ismaili Muslims.
“As a result of the attack, several people were injured and two have died so far,” the police said.
A man who attacked with a large knife is hospitalized in the center of Lisbon after he was shot dead by police.
“The attacker was ordered to stop the attack, but he did not obey and moved towards the police with a knife in his hand,” the report says.
“Given the serious and ongoing threat, the agents used weapons against the man, reaching and neutralizing the attacker,” the police added.
The attack took place in ismaili center from Lisbon. The world headquarters of this community of Shia Muslims is located in Lisbon and their spiritual leader, Aga Khanreceived Portuguese citizenship in 2019.
Ismaili Muslims are a Shia community of about 15 million people in 30 countries, of which about 7,000 live in Portugal. AFP.
