Peskov said why Ukraine’s membership in NATO is bad for Russia, but not for Finland and Sweden.
If Ukraine joins NATO, Russia could have a territorial dispute over the alliance state; Russia has no such dispute with Finland and Sweden. This was announced on Monday, May 16, by the press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov.
“We have no territorial disputes with either Finland or Sweden. While Ukraine could be a member of NATO, then Russia will have a territorial dispute with the alliance state, which carries a huge risk for whole continent, “he said.
At the same time, Peskov noted that Sweden and Finland’s entry into NATO causes concern to the Kremlin.
“We will strictly follow what will be the consequences of Finland and Sweden’s accession to NATO in practical terms from the point of view of our security, which must be absolutely assured,” he said.
Recall that over the weekend Finland and Sweden announced their decision to join NATO.
According to Swedish authorities, the process of joining the alliance could take almost a year.
