Russia warned on Friday of the risk of radioactive contamination of Ukraine if uranium weapons were used on the battlefield after the UK admitted plans to supply Kyiv with depleted uranium munitions.
“The West is fully aware of the negative consequences of the use of depleted uranium munitions. In spite of everything, (…) NATO countries and, in particular, Great Britain are ready to supply such weapons to Kyiv,” said Igor Kirillov, commander of the Radiation, Biological and Chemical Defense Forces. Russiaat a press conference.
Kirillov warned that after the use of these weapons, “large areas of crops in the territory Ukraine they will be contaminated, and through road transport, radioactive substances can spread to the rest of the territory.”
He emphasized that the damage to the health of civilians and military personnel would be “irreparable”, and emphasized that the greatest danger to a person is the defeat of his internal organs by a cloud that spreads the said radioactive particles “in the form of dust.”
“In addition to infecting its own population, this will cause enormous economic damage to the Ukrainian agricultural sector (…) by stopping any export of agricultural products from the territory of Ukraine. Ukraine for decades, if not centuries,” he said.
He recalled that NATO used the specified ammunition in Yugoslavia (15 tons Uranus impoverished) and Iraq (300 tons), which caused an increase in cancer in these territories.
“It must be emphasized that in military conflicts, ammunition with Uranus the impoverished was used exclusively by NATO,” he stressed.
Putin’s warning
Russian President Vladimir Putin warned this week that Moscow would be forced to respond if Ukraine use weapons with a “nuclear component”.
In this regard, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov assured that there is no convention against the use of these weapons, because the West prevented this.
This Monday, on the website of the British Parliament, the Deputy Secretary of Defense Great BritainAnabel Goldie, answered a question from Lord Hilton, a member of the House of Lords, about the possibility of sending these projectiles to Ukraine.
“In addition to sending a squadron of Challenger 2 tanks to Ukrainewe will supply shells with Uranus impoverished,” said Goldie, noting that they are more effective at destroying armored vehicles.
For its part, the British Ministry of Defense accused the day before Russia “disinformation” for the statement that ammunition with Uranus the impoverished has a “nuclear component”.
A spokesman for that ministry pointed out that “the British Army has been using depleted uranium in its armor-piercing rounds for decades” and “it’s a standard component and has nothing to do with nuclear weapons or capabilities.” (As reported by EFE)
