For Renat Kuzmin, a former people’s deputy, the court chose in absentia a measure of restraint in the form of detention without an alternative in the form of bail.
This was announced today, March 24, by the press service of the State Bureau of Investigation.
As part of the pre-trial investigation, DBR employees established that the deputy, on the eve and after the start of a full-scale invasion of Russia, placed propaganda materials in the media to the detriment of Ukraine, the DBR notes.
So, the department notes that Kuzmin, starting from March 2021 and even after the start of a full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, voiced information in his speeches, messages on social networks and on his own website that was propaganda in nature.
The goal was to create an anti-Ukrainian sentiment in society and informational influence to damage the sovereignty, territorial integrity, inviolability and security of the state, the DBR notes.
It is noted that Kuzmin’s actions are qualified under Part 1 of Art. 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (high treason), which is punishable by imprisonment for up to 15 years with confiscation of property.
Kuzmin in 2019 became a people’s deputy from the Opposition Platform for Life. On October 5, 2022, he was reported on suspicion of high treason. On January 13, 2023, the Verkhovna Rada terminated his deputy powers ahead of schedule.
