Efforts by the German authorities to enter into agreements with alternative fuel suppliers are ongoing.
Germany plans to stop importing Russian oil by the end of the year, though the pan-European ban was not introduced as part of the next round of sanctions. Bloomberg reported this on May 16, citing government sources.
Berlin is already working to get deals with alternative suppliers, officials said, and the government is confident it will resolve the remaining logistics issues within the next six to seven months.
The government of Chancellor Olaf Scholz aims to advance the national plan as part of European sanctions against the Russian Federation for its invasion of Ukraine. At the same time, the agency’s interlocutors did not specify which countries would make up the deficit.
According to the country’s Ministry of Economy, Germany has already reduced the share of Russia’s oil consumption from 35% to 12%.
Oil and energy security sanctions are expected to be the focus of Scholz’s meeting with Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte on May 19, and of talks with Qatar’s Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani in Berlin on May 20.
Earlier it was reported that representatives of a number of EU countries spoke about the postponement of Russia’s oil embargo.
