Social Democrats have historically shown the worst results in federal state elections, which were once their stronghold.
In Germany, the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) won a resounding victory in the elections for state parliament (Landtag) in North Rhine-Westphalia. According to preliminary official results, announced on Monday morning, May 16, the party of the current prime minister of the state, Hendrik Wüst, gets 35.7% of the vote. This is 2.7% higher than the 2017 Landtag elections.

In this regard, the Social Democratic Party (SPD), of which current German Chancellor Olaf Scholz is also a member, has worsened its performance, losing 4.5% compared to 2017. According to this year’s election results, gaining he had 26.7% of the vote. This was the worst result in the history of the Social Democrats in the Landtag elections in the federal state, which was their former stronghold.
The most significant increase was shown by “vegetables”, which received the support of 18.2% of voters. This is a plus of 11.8%. In turn, the Free Democratic Party (FDP), which is part of the ruling coalition at the federal level, lost by 6.7% to North Rhine-Westphalia, which garnered 5.9% of the vote as a result.
Right-wing populists from the Alternative for Germany (AfD) also exacerbated the result five years ago by 2%. They passed Landtag with 5.4%. The Left Party won only 2.1% of the vote, not breaking the 5% barrier, while all other parties together – 6.1%.
So, while maintaining this alignment with the Landtag of the new convocation, the CDU party will receive 76 seats, the SPD – 56, the Greens – 39, the AfD and the FDP – 12 seats each.
As many as 55.5% of voters turned out in the North Rhine -Westphalia state parliament elections, considered by experts as an important test of political sentiment in the country, reaching 55.5% of voters – this is a historically low level. 13 million people have the right to vote on the land – 6.7 million women and 6.3 million men. 29 parties took part in the election.
