The operation was a response to an Iranian drone strike on a coalition base, in which one soldier was killed and six others were wounded.
On the night of March 23, the United States launched strikes against formations associated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in eastern Syria in response to a drone strike on a coalition base. This was reported by the press service of the Pentagon.
It was noted that the purpose of the operation was to protect US personnel.
“At the direction of President (Joe) Biden, I authorized US Central Command forces to launch precision airstrikes in eastern Syria this evening against facilities used by groups associated with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) ,” Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said in a statement.
The United States Department of Defense said that on Thursday, a drone attacked a maintenance facility at a coalition base in Hasakah province, killing one soldier and wounding six others.
According to intelligence, the UAV is of Iranian origin.
It will be recalled that in February, the US military shot down a drone made by Iran in Syria.
