Sweden has officially decided to apply for membership in the North Atlantic alliance.
At its meeting today on May 15, 2022, the board of the ruling Social Democratic Party decided that the party would work to enable Sweden to apply for NATO membership, according to a statement on the official website.
In addition, the Social Democrats will strive to ensure that Sweden, if the NATO application is approved, declares unilateral reservations against the deployment of nuclear weapons and permanent bases on Swedish territory.
The fact that the Swedish government has changed internal plans and intends to officially apply for NATO membership on May 17, citing its own sources, wrote Svenska Dagbladet.
According to the publication, there is a plan for a process in which a formal letter with Sweden’s bid to join the North Atlantic Alliance will be given in Brussels on Tuesday to NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg (or to his representatives if Stoltenberg, which remains self -contained. -Isolation with a confirmed coronavirus, will still not return to work).
This decision has not been officially made public due to the fact that the ruling Social Democratic Party, which also has opponents of membership, has not yet completed an internal discussion. However, with the volume of NATO naysayers, officials are expected to announce on Sunday night that they have approved a course towards the Alliance.
Earlier, Finland also decided to apply to NATO.
