In Belarus, a deliberately directed campaign of violence and repression against those who oppose the authorities has been carried out.
Crimes against humanity are being committed on the territory of Belarus. These include torture, murder, sexual violence, gender-based violence and violations of human rights to freedom of expression. UNPO experts came to this conclusion on Friday, March 17, DW wrote.
In particular, as stated by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk, Belarus is carrying out a deliberately directed campaign of violence and repression against people who oppose the current government, criticize it or are suspected of disloyalty to the current regime.
Türk stressed that the impunity of the regime is developing in this country, and that civil society, freedom of expression and an alternative position have been almost completely destroyed.
It was noted that the experts made their conclusions based on interviews with 207 victims of the Lukashenka regime, on the testimony of witnesses of repressions, as well as on the basis of photos, videos, medical and court documents.
The situation in Belarus was studied from May 1, 2020 to December 31, 2022.
It should be reminded that the Minsk City Court sentenced the former editor-in-chief of the largest Belarusian independent portal TUT.BY Marina Zolotova and the ex-general director of this media Lyudmila Chekina to 12 years in a penal colony.
