Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said his country would ratify Finland’s NATO membership separately from Sweden.
According to him, the Finnish side has fulfilled all the conditions for membership, so the approval of its entry will be put to the vote of the Turkish parliament. Discussions about Sweden’s membership are still ongoing. Turkey is waiting for commitments to extradite suspected Kurdish extremists.
The ratification of Finland’s and Sweden’s accession to NATO is hindered by Hungary.
Last year, Sweden and Finland applied to join NATO due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the countries’ proximity to Russia.
Turkey opposed the accession of Sweden and Finland to the North Atlantic Alliance, but recently the position on Finland has softened. The conflict between Sweden and Turkey escalated, in particular due to the burning of the Koran in the center of Stockholm in January.
The membership of both NATO countries can be realized if it is ratified by Turkey and Hungary.
