Moscow will lose military influence in the CSTO countries and Georgia, as it moves its troops into Ukraine.
The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) believes that Russia will lose military influence in the CSTO countries, as it redeploys forces from there for the war in Ukraine. This is stated in the ISW summary for Thursday, March 16.
“Moscow will lose its military influence in the CSTO countries and Georgia, as it has transferred elements of Russia’s permanently deployed forces from its bases in Kyrgyzstan, occupied Abkhazia and South Ossetia and Tajikistan for the war against Ukraine, ” said the experts.
Analysts note that on March 16, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan accused Azerbaijan of preparing a new large-scale offensive against Nagorno-Karabakh.
At the same time, he said that Armenia will have to apply to the UN Security Council if the Russian Federation fails to maintain a truce in the region, established by the agreement of November 9, 2020.
“The Russian “peace force” in Nagorno-Karabakh is probably not enough. After all, in March 2022, Moscow again sent units of the 15th separate guards motorized rifle brigade – the only special Russian peacekeeping brigade – from Nagorno-Karabakh to Ukraine,” the report said.
At the same time, the ISW recalled that in June 2022, the Ukrainian General Staff reported that the Armed Forces of Ukraine inflicted serious losses on the 15th separate guards motorized rifle brigade of the Russian Federation, destroying approximately -about 800 and wounded about 400 soldiers out of 1,800 brigade personnel units that are in Ukraine.
Recall that a few days earlier, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said that the CSTO had “withdrawn” from Armenia. Yerevan has no plans to leave the organization, but it fears that the CSTO will withdraw from its positions in the country.
