It is reported that in 2014, Kovalenko, as a volunteer, joined the Black Tulip humanitarian mission, traveled to the temporarily occupied territory of Donetsk and Luhansk regions, where he searched for the bodies of dead Ukrainian soldiers. In total, he took more than 150 bodies of Ukrainian defenders. Before that, he spent 26 years searching for military graves from World War II.
