The IAEA says about 2.5 tons of uranium is missing from Libya

The organization’s inspectors found that one of Libya’s landfills was missing 10 barrels containing 2.5 tons of uranium.

Inspectors of the International Atomic Energy Agency discovered that about 2.5 tons of natural uranium disappeared without a trace from one of the test sites in Libya. This was reported by Reuters.

The head of the IAEA, Rafael Grossi, told the organization’s member countries that not a single barrel had been found at the uranium storage site. Where they went is not known.

The uranium disappeared from a facility no longer controlled by the Libyan government. Verification of the uranium storage site was scheduled for 2022, but for security reasons it was postponed. Because of this, the inspection was held on March 14 this year.

During the inspection, IAEA inspectors discovered that 10 barrels containing approximately 2.5 tons of natural uranium in the form of UOC (Uranium Ore Concentrate), previously declared by Libya, were not on site.

It was previously reported that Iran had amassed uranium enriched to 84% purity, just 6% below the level required to create a nuclear weapon.
