The incident with the fall of the American reconnaissance drone MQ-9 Reaper in the Black Sea after the Su-27 was brought down by Russian aircraft will not cause a direct conflict between the United States and Russia. This opinion was expressed by analysts at the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).
Earlier, the commander of the US Air Force in Europe and Africa, General James B. Hecker said that two Russian Su-27s shot down an MQ-9 drone. At the same time, the Russian Ministry of Defense said that the drone crashed due to “abrupt maneuvering.”
Russian troops have used intimidation tactics against American and allied aircraft and ships for decades in numerous theaters, which did not lead to conflict, the ISW said.
They noted that such incidents did not automatically become the reason for the escalation of confrontation between the countries.
Considering that President Joe Biden has repeatedly spoken about the desire to avoid direct conflict between the US military from Russia, and the Kremlin has clearly and repeatedly demonstrated its unwillingness to start a war with NATO, there is no reason to believe that such incidents can lead to a dangerous escalation, the US summed up. .
On March 14, the US Air Force issued a statement saying that a Russian Su-27 fighter jet damaged an American MQ-9 Reaper reconnaissance and strike drone over the Black Sea during an interception, as a result of which it had to be flooded.
The US Department of Defense is working to declassify visual information related to the incident in international airspace over the Black Sea.
