The director of Rheinmetall said that the defense industry can provide everything needed, the question is the government’s decision.
Western countries are capable of producing more weapons than Russia can. In this regard, the European defense industry must double the production of ammunition for Ukraine’s victory in the war with Russia. This was said by the director of Germany’s largest ammunition manufacturer, Rheinmetall, Armin Papperger, in an interview with the Bloomberg news agency.
According to him, with appropriate support, the defense industry of Europe and the United States will be able to provide sufficient military equipment to Ukraine.
“Europe and the US are capable of doing more than Russia can do,” he said.
The company has enough capacity to produce 240,000 shells, but it plans to produce less than 150,000 this year.
“The defense industry should not be blamed for any lack of ammunition. The industry can provide what is needed,” he stressed.
Note that the availability of 155 mm ammunition is becoming increasingly important as Ukraine seeks to contain the Russian offensive in the Donetsk region. In particular, according to the Minister of Defense of Ukraine, Oleksiy Reznikov, the Armed Forces of Ukraine need more than 350,000 shells per month, which is more than three times the amount they currently use.
The head of the Ukrainian department turned to the European Union with a request to provide 250,000 shells per month. According to Papperger, this amount “is going to be difficult to do.”
“To achieve this speed it is necessary to double the capacity in Europe,” he explained.
As previously reported, by the end of 2022, Ukraine has become the third largest arms importer in the world thanks to military assistance from Western countries after the Russian invasion.
